That first, generous lather, the quiet scent of the bar and the softness of the foam is a small everyday ritual we rarely stop to question.

Yet behind that moment, is a single ingredient that artisan soap makers have relied on for generations: Coconut Oil.

In traditional cold process soapmaking, where time, patience, and chemistry quietly work together, coconut oil plays a foundational role. It is not simply another oil added to a recipe. It is often the ingredient that makes a soap feel like soap.

Understanding what it brings to a bar helps reveal the difference between a soap that merely looks beautiful and one that performs beautifully too.

A Tropical Fruit with Remarkable Qualities

Coconut oil is pressed from the dried meat of the mature coconut (Cocos nucifera). While it is widely loved in cooking and skincare, its true magic in soapmaking lies in the way it behaves during the soapmaking process itself.

Every oil used in soap contributes something different. Some bring softness, others conditioning, others longevity. Coconut oil is unique because it contributes several essential qualities at once.

When combined with water and lye in cold process soapmaking, coconut oil undergoes a natural chemical transformation known as saponification. During this process, the oils are converted into soap molecules while also naturally producing glycerin, a gentle humectant that helps skin retain moisture.

The resulting soap compound derived from coconut oil is known as sodium cocoate, and it is responsible for many of the qualities we associate with a satisfying bar of soap.

"That creamy lather is not simply about indulgence..."

The Secret Behind a Beautiful Lather

Soap makers prize coconut oil because it produces rich, generous bubbles that appear quickly when water meets the bar. Even in cooler water or areas with harder water, coconut oil helps the soap perform reliably.

That creamy lather is not simply about indulgence, it also helps the soap spread easily across the skin, lifting away impurities and rinsing clean. For many soap makers, this dependable lather is what turns a simple bar into something quietly luxurious.

Strength and Structure in Natural Soap

In soapmaking, certain oils are known as “hard oils” because they are naturally solid at room temperature. Coconut oil falls into this category, which means it helps produce a bar that unmoulds cleanly, holds its shape, and lasts longer in the shower. With the right balance, however, the result is a bar that feels firm, elegant, and long-lasting.

The Art of Balance

Coconut oil is powerful and like many good ingredients, balance is everything. If used in very high amounts, its cleansing strength can become too intense for everyday skin, leaving it feeling tight or dry. Skilled soap makers carefully balance coconut oil with other nourishing ingredients such as olive oil, shea butter, or castor oil to create a gentler, more rounded bar.

Another technique called superfatting ensures that a small portion of the oils remain untouched during the soapmaking process. These oils remain in the finished bar and help support the skin with added softness and conditioning.

Choosing the Right Coconut Oil

Not all coconut oils behave the same way in soapmaking. For traditional cold process soap, soap makers most often choose refined coconut oil, sometimes referred to as 76° coconut oil based on its melting point.

While virgin coconut oil carries a beautiful natural aroma in its raw form, that scent does not survive the soapmaking process. Because of this, refined coconut oil is commonly preferred for its consistency and reliability in soap formulas. The focus, ultimately, is not the scent of the raw oil, but the quality of the soap it helps create.

" We know who makes it, how it is made, and what goes into it."

Where Our Soap Base Begins

Behind every bar we finish in our studio is a foundation built on the same values we apply to our craft: quality, consistency, and a commitment to natural ingredients.

We source our farmhouse soap base from a trusted South African supplier whose formulations are built around 100% natural ingredients and genuine soapmaking expertise, no synthetic fillers, no unnecessary additives, and no shortcuts. For our customers, this means every bar begins with a traceable, locally produced source. We know who makes it, how it is made, and what goes into it.

Each soap base is a carefully considered starting point, enriched with natural oils like coconut oil, which we then make our own through our small-batch hand-poured methods, the scent we thoughtfully select, and the careful finishing that defines every By Kes bar.
